At the time of its 1985 release, Stevie Nicks's ROCK A LITTLE was greeted with some critical puzzlement, and it was less commercially successful than her previous solo records, scoring only one hit single, the Top 5 "Talk to Me." In retrospect, although the distinctively mid-'80s production dates the album somewhat, this is one of Nicks's most personally revealing and heartfelt sets of songs since the musical diary entries of Fleetwood Mac's RUMOURS. Nicks's personal life at this point was getting nearly as much press as her music--her battles with drugs were becoming public knowledge--and it's hard to separate the two in songs as seemingly revealing as "I Can't Wait" and "The Nightmare." The closing piano ballad, "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You," which Nicks sings in her lived-in voice, is one of her finest performances.
