He perfected Phil Spector's wall-of-sound into a more complex, stunning approach. He was inspired by the Beatles' RUBBER SOUL, and PET SOUNDS was, in turn, an inspiration for SGT. PEPPER.\r\nThe devoutly romantic \"God Only Knows\" and the hopeful \"Wouldn't It Be Nice\" reflect an innocent time of yearning post-adolescence. From the complex upward progressions of \"You Still Believe In Me\" to the heartbeat bass of \"Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder),\" Wilson paid attention to every nanosecond of sound. The traditional folk song \"Sloop John B,\" with its thickly interwoven vocals, was a major hit for the band, but PET SOUNDS' astonishing power comes from its less familiar songs. In direct contrast are the songs that sound very inward and emotionally bleak and twisted, possibly reflecting some of Vernon's struggles along the way. The desperate \"715 - CR??KS,\" which features nothing but a choir of Auto-Tuned Vernons singing aching lyrics that sound like they're being ripped from the deepest, darkest corner of his tortured soul, is maybe the darkest track. In yet more contrast, a few songs on the album retain much of the hushed acoustic feel of his earlier albums, but with weird electronics and tricks around the edges. The beautiful \"29 #Strafford APTS\" is a folk song at its core, but he adds altered vocals, queasily pitched saxophones, and distorted electronic tones to provide some drama to the song. He does similar things to the album-ending piano ballad \"00000 Million\" and the tense, almost ambient \"21 M??N WATER,\" turning them from typically sad Bon Iver songs into something weird and oddly more affecting. The only track on the album that falls short of the standard set elsewhere is \"8 (circle),\" which makes the mistake of being a little too earnestly straightforward and too much like a Bruce Hornsby song. This was probably the one that needed the most manipulation, and it's the one that gets the least. One little misstep can't keep 22, A Million from being a return to form, even as it turns the established form on its head and gives it a spin. It's clear that the upheavals in Vernon's life and music are a matched set; he turns his pain into art as he does a deep dive into exploration of technique and sound. While working on his new TV series, Atlanta, Glover and his longtime sidekick Ludwig G?ransson seem to have had some kind of musical awakening brought on by late-'60s dipped-in-psychedelia soul and early-'70s earthy funk. \"Awaken, My Love!\" has fuzz guitars, vintage synths of all kinds, burbling organs, grimy basslines, and masses of backing vocals adorning the songs; the influence of Sly Stone and George Clinton's various groups is strong, and Glover doesn't rap at all. He does use his voice like an acrobat, though, sometimes crooning sweetly, other times screaming like a demon. He doesn't have a classic soul singer's voice, but what he does have is personality and it comes through loud and clear, even through the murkiest moments of nasty funk. Glover and G?ransson construct the album like a soundtrack to a nostalgic trip, hitting all the sweet spots of that magic moment when funk and soul got truly odd and inspiring. Tripped-out ballads like \"Me and Your Mama\" and \"Terrified\" bump up against massive jams like \"Riot\" and \"Boogieman,\" and totally oddball moments like \"California\" match up well with heartfelt songs about fatherhood (\"The Night Me and Your Mama Met,\" \"Stand Tall\"), which give the album its heart. Empowering pop-soul songs (\"Have Some Love\"), gloomy tales of the entertainment biz (\"Zombies\"), late-night detours into true love (\"Redbone\") -- everything Glover tries comes off just right and every note on every song is perfectly placed. G?ransson and the tight crew of musicians must all be dedicated students of the era's sounds, and they play with controlled passion and fire. It's not an academic exercise by any means, though. The songs are all as memorable as Bootsy Collins' star-shaped sunglasses, and Glover's vocal gymnastics and impassioned delivery vault things past into more rarified air. It's true that the album owes a deep debt to the sounds that inspired it, but there are times when the music, voices, and words come together to make something that sounds owned by Childish Gambino alone. Throughout it all, Urie paints himself with Michelangelo-esque strokes as a flamboyant cross between James Cagney, Biggie Smalls, and Beyonc?, singing \"I'm a moon-walker, I'm like M.J. up in the clouds\" on \"Dancing's Not a Crime.\" He also has the same obsessions: religious iconography, the lure of Los Angeles, and the constant struggle between social concern and personal interest. As he sings on the anthemic \"Say Amen (Saturday Night),\" \"And if I try to change my life one more day, there would be nobody else to save\/And I can't change into a person I don't wanna be, so\/Oh, it's Saturday night.\" The rest of the album pulses with an equal level of throw-your-hands-in-the-air energy, as Urie soars through the arrangements, his voice as highly resonant and stage-ready as ever. Drummer Nick Mason was barely involved, while keyboardist Rick Wright seemed to be completely out of the picture. Still, The Wall was a mighty, sprawling affair, featuring 26 songs with vocals: nearly as many as all previous Floyd albums combined. The story revolves around the fictional Pink Floyd's isolation behind a psychological wall. The wall grows as various parts of his life spin out of control, and he grows incapable of dealing with his neuroses.
