The album is a textbook study in reggae's sultry rhythmic power, and the Barrett Brothers (Aston \"Family Man\" Barrett on bass and Carlton on drums) demonstrate throughout why they are regarded as one of the most influential rhythm sections of all time. While not absolutely essential, it should certainly be the next purchase for anyone who already owns all of the official Marley albums. While the disc is perhaps a little light on variety, it's still a Bob Marley album and thus as good as the best work of many other artists. Although he cut his first recordings in the early 1960s, it was not until the 1973 release of CATCH A FIRE that Marley and the Wailers became international stars. Eight years later Marley was dead, a victim of cancer. In between, he recorded eight studio albums and several live albums, all of excellent quality.\nUPRISING is Marley's final album, and it's also one of his best. As on all his recordings, Marley's writing displays the gift for melody that helped non-Jamaican audiences gain access to his music even when he was singing about the details of island life and the doctrine of Rastafarianism. Even if omnipresence has since made it pop-reggae's \"Don't Worry Be Happy,\" the U.K. crew's version is in the Jamaican tradition of covering sweet, soothing tunes that pre-date lovers rock, plus the rest of this all-cover-versions album sticks with the classic reggae songbook, as even the Impressions' \"Keep on Moving\" is done in a style that honors the 1973 recording from Bob Marley \u0026amp; the Wailers. If \"Red Red Wine\" is effortless almost to a fault, Jimmy Cliff's \"Many Rivers to Cross\" is performed with full heart and can rock the soul's foundation, while \"Johnny Too Bad\" is just spiky enough to bring reminders of the group's birth in the time and land of post-punk. Everything else is A- at worst, and the end-to-end LP flow is classic while recontextualizing \"Red Red Wine\" for the better.
